NOW taking deposits for our early SPRING Harvest!

Hey there, friends! We are writing to announce an early spring harvest this year!
This is an early harvest so these would be on the smaller side of our estimated weights. (approx 75-100lb/quarter or less).
If you’ve wanted to try a purchasing a quarter, but were intimidated by higher hanging weights/larger investment-this is your chance!!!
We are NOW TAKING DEPOSITS on a first come, first served basis for bulk purchases of beef that will be available to pickup mid-late April. There are a limited number of quarters available, so act quickly!
If you would like to purchase a quarter/half send us a deposit for $100 (for a quarter) or $200 (for a half) BY FRIDAY, March 27, 2015. Please make sure your check has your phone number and/or email address written on it. We’ll let you know when we receive it and confirm your quarter/half. This is first come, first served, so don’t wait!!!
Oh, and if you haven’t had a chance to look around yet, Melissa put a bunch of info on the web! So send your friends and neighbors wanting more info to http://www.murdockfarmsnc.com They can sign up for the newsletter and get a little history of the farm! Also, please note, our butcher’s prices have increased and are noted below.
Thank you so much for your business; we hope to see you soon!
best,
Doug, Melissa & Graham
P.S. For those of you that may be new to our email list, here is a list of FAQs about bulk purchasing.
How does it work?
We’re glad you asked! We send out an email (LIKE THIS ONE – THIS IS THE EMAIL) to our entire customer list when we have a few cows ready for harvest. You respond with your intent to purchase a quarter or half, followed (within 7 days) by a check for a deposit. Once we’ve confirmed your order, we’ll send you an email to let you know when the beef will be available for pickup from the butcher and the remaining balance owed to Murdock Farms. You pay for the remainder, drive to the butcher (where you pay for their services) and then you drive home with a load of delicious, wholesome Murdock Farms 100% grass-fed beef for your freezer!
How much does it cost?
The cost for our 100% grass-fed beef by the half or quarter is $5.00 per pound on the hanging, or dress, weight. The customer is also responsible for the butcher fees which are: $15 per quarter + $0.51 per pound (also on the hanging weight). Each cow will dress out differently, but a rough approximation would be 100-125 pounds of hanging weight per quarter.
Deposit to Murdock Farms for a quarter = $100
Deposit to Murdock Farms for a half = $200
Deposit to Murdock Farms for a whole = $400
How much meat do I get in a quarter? a half?
On average, a cow will produce between 350-500 pounds of hanging, or dress weight. Of that, approximately 70% will become packaged meat. So, for an average cow, a quarter would produce roughly 60-90 pounds of meat for your freezer. A half would produce roughly 100-175 pounds of meat for your freezer.
What am I gonna do with that much meat? Can Murdock Farms split a quarter for me?
Find friends, neighbors and extended family to split the bounty with you. Everyone gets a 100% grass-fed alternative to conventional grocery store beef – at an even better price than grocery store beef!! And if you have ever had the luxury of going “shopping” in the freezer of your basement or garage, you understand another reason to order in bulk – convenience!
Unfortunately not. We will sell to one individual per quarter. As a suggestion, if you are looking for folks to split a quarter with, try posting on our Facebook page to see if others are interested. We are, after all, a community farm – what a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors!
What do i get in my quarter/half?
If you purchase a half, it may be cut and packaged according to your preferences.
Quarter shares will be cut using a standard cutting order and include a mix of hamburger, roasts, steaks, stew beef and cube steak, liver and soup bones.
How is the meat packaged?
The meat is wrapped in plastic, then wrapped in “lock-out” paper with a wax film for ultimate freezer protection. As long as the paper remains un-torn, the meat will last for up to a year (some say even longer!!) in the freezer. All cuts are marked “NOT FOR SALE” in compliance with rules for NCDA-inspected facilities. This is to prohibit anyone from selling meat after it’s left the butcher’s possession.
Do I need a chest freezer?
Unless you are splitting the half or quarter with a large-enough number or friends and family, the answer is probably, “yes.” Lowes and Craigslist have small, affordable chest freezers that will hold a quarter.
Where do I pick up the meat?
Caldwell’s Meat Processing, a NCDA inspected facility, near Denver, NC. Their address is: 3730 Goodson Rd. Maiden, NC 28650 and phone: (828) 428-8833. Click here to see it on a map.
How long does it take once I order?
Once we deliver the cows to the butcher, the meat will be ready for pickup in just over two weeks. We will confirm, once we receive your deposit, what date the beef will be available to pick up.
I really like visiting in the front yard of the farm. Why is Murdock Farms selling this way now?
We really like that, too; we’re gonna miss seeing you so often! Please read our Spring 2012 newsletter here to answer this very good question.
Why can’t I pick up at Murdock Farms?
Since we are using a smaller, NCDA-inspected butcher facility, we can no longer utilize our Meat Handler’s License. The meat must go from the butcher’s possession, directly to the customer’s possession.
help spread the word about 100% grass-fed beef - share this with your friends and family!
